How to Change Motor Oil and the Oil Filter

It is important to change the oil and oil filter regularly so your car can operate properly and last longer. Most cars should have the oil and filter changed every 3,000 miles. It is a good idea to follow the car manual for the correct intervals.

Materials Needed

  • Oil filter

  • Oil filter wrench

  • Fresh oil

  • Socket wrench

  1. Find the oil filter on your car. Most filters can be found near the oil pan. Use an oil filter wrench to remove the oil filter. Turn it in a counter clockwise direction.

  2. Place the oil filter in an oil drain container so the oil can drain from it. Use a rag to clean the seal surface on the engine block. Remove the rubber gasket from the oil filter.

  3. Coat the rubber gasket on the new oil filter with fresh oil. Put the new oil filter into place. Twist the oil filter in a clockwise direction to secure it.

  4. Put on gloves to protect your hands. Locate the drain plug on the oil pan. Use a socket wrench to loosen the drain plug by turning it in a counter clockwise direction.

  5. Allow the oil to completely drain into an oil container. Replace the drain plug and wipe it with the rag after it is in place.
