How to Change Neon Rear Brakes

In many cities and states, it is illegal to operate a neon if its brake lights are not working properly. When brakes lights are not working, it is usually due to a bulb being burnt out. New bulbs can be purchased from your local auto parts store and easily installed.

Items Needed:

  • Lug wrench

  • Jack

  • Jack stand

  • Bricks or concrete blocks

  • Ratchets

  • Bungee cords

  • Socket wrench

  • Brake cleaner

  • Brake grease

  1. Park the neon on a safe, flat and level surface. A driveway or garage is sufficient.

  2. Use a lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the wheels. Do not remove them yet.

  3. Use a jack to lift the back of the vehicle a few inches off the ground. Place jacks stands underneath the vehicle to help support it.

  4. Place bricks or concrete blocks in front of the neon's front tires. This will keep it from moving forward and falling off the jack stands.

  5. Remove the lug nuts and set them aside. Pull the wheel off the neon and lay it flat on the ground.

  6. Use a wrench and ratchet to remove the brake caliper.

  7. Use a bungee cord to pull the caliper away from the brake assembly, and remove the old brake pads.

  8. Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts that hold the rear brake caliper in place.

  9. Use brake cleaner to remove any rust or dirt that may be present on the brake assembly and rotors. Inspect the rotors. If they appear to be damaged, change them as well.

  10. Place the new rotor on the hub. Use a wrench to tighten the screws that hold it in place.

  11. Apply a fair amount of brake grease to the new brake pads. Put the new brake pads on the brakes. Each brake should fit into a slot on the brake caliper.

  12. Use a wrench to pull back the piston and hold it against the side of the caliper.

  13. Use socket to pull the brake caliper back and place the wheel back on the neon. Repeat these steps to change the opposite rear brake.
