How to Change a Blower Motor Resistor
The device in a vehicle that controls the speed of the heating and cooling fan is the blower motor resistor. There are two types of blowers: those that are wired and those that are on a circuit board. If the fan speed never seems to change, then the blower is most likely bad and will need to be replaced.
Things you’ll need:
- Screwdriver
- New blower
- Remove the dashboard panel on the passenger side. Locate any push-pin or screws that may be holding the panel onto the dash itself. The push-pins will have a little pin in the middle that will have to be popped up using a screwdriver. Once all
the push-pins and screws have been removed, the dash board should come off easily. - Locate the blower motor resistor under the dashboard. There should be some electrical wires connected to it from behind. These will need to be unplugged before any more work can be performed on it.
- Unscrew the screws holding the blower motor into place. The blower motor is held into place by a metal plate around it and should have approximately four screws holding it on.
- Remove the blower from the housing it was sitting in.
- Place the new blower in the empty housing space. Using the same metal plate and screws, secure the new blower in place. Make sure the screws are secure and not loose.
- Locate the wires that were previously disconnected and reconnect to the new motor. They should connect the exact same way as the old blower.
- Replace the passenger side dashboard. Pop the push-pins back down when the dashboard is in the correct position. These will secure it in place.
- Test the new blower motor by turning the car on and changing the fan speeds for both the heating and cooling system.
