How to Change a Car Tire

There are many people that do not know how to change a car tire, which in an emergency situation could be disastrous. Both men and women should know how to change a tire, but many assume they never need to know this skill. However, if you are out alone and end up with a flat, you are at the mercy of others if you do not know how to change the tire.

  1. Check your car to make sure it has
a good spare tire, a tire jack and a lug wrench before you leave
you home. It is vital that your vehicle has the correct tools before
you leave your home; when you have a flat tire, it is a bit late at
that point to make sure you have the tools you need to change the
    flat.

  2. Move to a safe side of the road if
you have a flat while driving. Make sure the parking brake is
engaged and the vehicle is off. If your flat happens in a parking
lot, you are in luck since this is much safer than changing it on
the side of the highway, but you have to work with what you have.

  3. Take the cover of the rim off (if
there is one). Use your lug wrench to loosen the lugs, you should
loosen them in the shape of a star. Never loosen one lug at a time
completely, just loosen them to the point you can twist them off
with your hands, but do not remove them totally.

  4. Remove your jack from the car,
which is typically located in the trunk. You need to place the top
part of the jack that lifts the car in an area that lifts the
vehicle in a way that you can slip the flat off and put the new one
on. Use the mechanism, which is normally an up and down motion to
lift the car up so that the flat is off the ground.

  5. Unscrew the rest of the lugs, but
place them in one area so they do not become lost. Slip the flat
tire off and place it in your trunk. Put the spare tire on your
vehicle and tighten the lug nuts by hand, do not use the lug wrench
    at this point.

  6. Use the mechanism to lower the car
down onto the spare. Then tighten the lugs in the same star
formation you used to remove the flat. Put everything back in your
trunk and proceed driving to your detonation. If your car came
equipped with a donut-type spare, you need to head to a tire
dealership and either have your flat repaired or buy a new tire as
    soon as possible.
