How to Change a Carrier Bearing Without a Press

Oil in the housing usually becomes contaminated after the carrier bearing fails. The oil is contaminated with metal shavings that come off the bearings. The housing should be cleaned as soon as possible to the shavings can be removed so the differential is not damaged.

Materials Needed

  • Cutoff tool

  • 2x4 wood

  • Hammer

  • Bearing

  1. Take the cutoff tool and cut the cage that contains the bearings. You want to be able to reach in and take out the bearing. Take out of the bearing from the cage. Remove the cage as well.

  2. Use the cutoff tool to place a grove on the carrier. The grove should be placed in the inner race. Be careful because you do not want to create a hole in the carrier.

  3. Put a chisel in the grove you just made with the cutoff tool. Make sure it is standing up. Take a hammer and hit the chisel. This will cause the inner race to break. You may have to hit it until it breaks or it becomes loose so you can pull it off.

  4. Locate the opposite side of the carrier. Put it on top of a 2x4 piece of wood. Grab a handful of bearing and place it into the carrier. Push the bearing as far into the carrier as they will go. You want to make sure everything is straight.

  5. Push the bearing more with a pipe that is the same diameter as the bearing race. Hammer everything down with the hammer until it reaches the flange on the inside.
