How to Change a Fuel Filter

If you notice that your car is going slower than normal, or if it seems to have lost some of its power, then you may need to change the fuel filter to give it more pep. Changing the fuel filter is a simple process that can be done by a novice without the need for going to a mechanic.

  1. Wear protective glasses when changing the fuel filter. This will protect your eyes from any dust or debris.

  2. Put the vehicle up in the air. You can use either a jack and jack stands or a drive-up ramp. Depending on the weight of the vehicle, you may want to use both just in case for safety.

  3. Locate the fuel filter. This will be found in different locations depending on the type of vehicle that you own. Most are located near the fuel tank, so start searching in that vicinity. If you still have the car's owner's manual handy, then you can look there.

  4. Take the covering off the fuel filter. Most vehicles come equipped with a plastic covering over the fuel filter to protect it from getting damaged. You can take this off with a wrench.

  5. Disconnect the fuel lines from the filter. Depending on the type of vehicle that you have, the lines may be attached by links, brackets or clips. If they are brackets, then use a wrench. If they are links or clips, then you will need to use a screwdriver.

  6. Drain the fuel lines. Use a pencil or pen to cap the fuel lines and make sure to keep them tilted until they are completely drained.

  7. Take the fuel filter out. Be sure to take note of the direction that it was in so that you will be able to put the new one in correctly. Some filters come with arrows that point which way they need to be inserted. The filter should face the engine and away from the tank.

  8. Insert the new filter. Make sure the arrows are pointed in the proper direction, which is facing the engine. Next, put the hoses and guard back on.
