How to Charge for Painting Jobs

Painting can be a fun job but you need to make sure you are charging correctly. This can be a  job you do full-time or do on the side. There are several aspects you should consider when deciding how much to charge for a paint job.

Items Needed:

  • Notebook

  • Pencil

  • Painting Supplies

1. Call around to other paint shops and see what they charge for painting jobs. Keep in mind that you might be doing yours as an independent contractor; so your rate might be different. The idea of calling these places is so you get a good idea of what to charge.

2. Make a list of the small and large paint jobs you are willing to do. The amount of painting you are willing to do should be discussed between you and the client. Making a list of what you will and will not do is a good start to figuring out set-in-stone prices.

3. Do a free consultation with your client. You will not be able to charge a fixed rate for small and large rooms so you need to figure out how large each room is before setting a price. If a room is small enough then it is only fair that the price is smaller too. During your consultation you can figure out gas mileage and other fees associated with the paint job.

4. Decide on the way you want to charge. This does not have to be set in stone but it helps with future client. Decide if you will charge your clients by the hour or if you will charge them by the requested job.
