How to Check If Your Insurance Covers Alternative Medicine

Alternative medicine is becoming increasingly popular and due to this increase in demand, there are many insurance companies that have begun to offer coverage for certain alternative treatments. The treatments that are mostly covered are those that require a license from the state and that treat conditions that are medically necessary.

  1. Look into your insurance booklet to determine the services that are covered. These services should be listed inside your insurance plan booklet, if you have it available. Some of the alternative medicine treatments that may be listed include massage and chiropractic services.

  2. Call the insurance company to speak with a representative and inquire whether or not alternative medicine is covered under your specific plan. A good way for you to speed up the process is to have at least a couple of procedures in mind to ask about.

  3. Investigate your policy to determine the supplemental clauses and to see if there are any loopholes in regards to alternative medicine treatment coverage. You should also find any specialties that are prohibited from coverage.

  4. Check with the actual provider of the services you are inquiring about, to see if they accept insurance. If so, check with those companies and confirm whether or not they offer supplemental plans that are designed for individuals.

  5. Check with your employer to see if you have access to a flexible spending account. These may also be referred to as Section 125 plans and cover excess costs for dependent care and medical costs, which may include alternative care.

  6. Work on making payments to your doctor for costs that are not covered by your insurance company. You may find some doctors that will offer you the option to make monthly payments for these costs.
