How to Check Tax Refund Status

Once taxes have been filed most people would like to know the status of their tax refund. Waiting to find out when you will receive your refund can become daunting. However, the Internal Revenue Service has several different options available to help you find out the status.

  1. Gather your information together you will need to check the status of your tax refund. Before the Internal Revenue Service will release information to you about your tax refund status you need to verify your identity. In order to do this you need your social security number, filing status (head of household, single, married, or married filing separately) and the amount of your refund.

  2. Check the status of your refund by using the IRS website. These services are provided in order to allow tax filers to quickly and conveniently check on their refund status. Plug in your information and the IRS will provide you with readily available updates concerning your income tax refund.

  3. Contact the IRS by phone to check on your refund status. This is convenient for those who would rather not put in their information online in order to check on your income tax return. You may speak with someone or use their automated phone information system.

  4. Find out the status of your refund from your tax preparation office. If you received a refund anticipation loan, you can contact the office where you filed your tax return. The customer service representative or your tax preparer should be able to give you the status of your refund. They may also have a contact number where you can call in and verify your refund status.
