How to Choose Basic Boxing Equipment
Boxing doesn’t require a lot of gear, but the quality of equipment you use can make a lot of difference in how you perform. Whether you want to be a professional fighter or box recreationally, you’ll need to find the right equipment to maximize your skills and protect yourself from injuries.
- Buy hand wraps, also known as wrist wraps, to protect your wrist and hands from common boxing injuries. Hand wraps help keep joints aligned, and reduce the impact from punches. There are many different types of wraps you can choose from. If you are a beginner, ask your trainer for advice regarding the type of hand wraps and the length you should use.
- Get a boxing mouthguard, also known as a mouthpiece or gumshield. Mouthguards protect teeth, gums and lips from injuries during fights. Avoid buying mouthguards that are used in contact sports. They usually have hard plastic frames that can cut your lips. Boxing mouthguards are molded to your teeth, and they are specifically designed to lessen the impact of a punch on your teeth and jaw.
- Select a boxing groin guard, also known as no-foul protector. Boxing groin guards are worn by both men and women. They offer more protection than cup guards used in other sports.
- Purchase headgear if you are an amateur boxer or if you want to protect yourself during sparring. Headgear reduces the risk of cuts, swelling, bruises and other soft-tissue damage. Fighters in amateur fighting competitions usually wear open-faced headgear that does not protect the chin or cheeks. However, amateur fighters can wear protective headgear that prevents any face contact during training.
- Choose a pair of boxing gloves that meets your needs. The quality of gloves you choose will have a direct impact on your performance. If you dream of becoming a professional fighter, invest in a high-quality pair of gloves that can help you live up to your full potential. If you box recreationally, choose a moderately priced pair of gloves that will help you get the most out of your training sessions.
