How to Choose Colors for Different Clothing and Apparel
An important part of any wardrobe is the color. Color has the power to flatter skin tone, or make you appear sallow. Doing a little research finding the colors that work best in wardrobe choices will be beneficial. Before long, choosing the best color will be second nature.
1. Determine your skin tone. Most people are sorted into seasons based on skin tone and certain colors work best.
- “Winter” complexions have blue or pink undertones. Skin may be pale white, yellowish-olive or dark. Many Asians and African Americans fall into this category. Winters are usually brunette, with deep colored eyes.
- “Spring” complexions have gold undertones and are usually creamy peach or white. Spring people frequently have blonde, straw-colored or strawberry red hair, rosy cheeks, freckles and blue or green eyes.
- “Summer” complexions also have pink or blue undertones but skin is pale and pink. Natural blondes or brunettes with pale eyes are usually summer complexions.
- “Autumn” complexions have gold undertones. Brunettes and redheads with golden brown eyes are the archetype.
2. Choose colors that will flatter skin tone and hair color.
- “Winters” look best in sharp, clear colors. White, black and navy are staples, while bright pops of shocking pink and red work well. Avoid pastels, opting for icy tones if wearing light colors.
- “Springs” should wear warm colors such as peach, golden yellow, camel and brown. Avoid dark, dull colors.
- “Summers” can wear pastels and soft neutrals in all shades. Lavender, plum and rose are the best color choices, complemented by shades of blue.
- “Autumns” look best in any color with a gold undertone. Beige, orange, gold and dark brown are most flattering choices.
3. Research online the best color choices for you. There is a plethora of fashion and style websites that cover fashion and color choices. You can also see magazines and books devoted to the same topics at your library.
