How to Choose Deck Lumber
Decks can be made of many materials, but wood remains popular for its ease of use and affordability. When choosing lumber for a deck, look for durable wood that will last for many years. Selecting the right type of wood will help protect your deck from the elements and be easy to care for.
- Select wood that is labeled for outdoor patio use. This wood will be more durable and will hold up better in the rain, sun and snow.
- Look for pressure treated wood to build your deck. Pressure treated wood does not rot and it repels bugs, but it will eventually turn a shade of green. If you do not want to have a green deck or want to avoid using chemicals, use pressure treated wood for the frame to give the deck stability, but use regular wood for the sides and steps, as these are easier to replace if needed.
- Look for woods that are naturally decay resistant and bug resistant, such as redwoods and cedar. Look for the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) trademark to ensure the wood has been harvested responsibly.
- Select only boards without imperfections such as knot holes or cracks. Boards with imperfections are not as strong and can break after being exposed to weather.
- Decide if you want a wood that will change color as it ages. Western Red Cedar is a brownish red color when you install it, but turns to a beautiful gray as it ages. It ages well in cold, heat, sun and rain. It can also be stained for more protection and beauty. Redwood also turns gray as it ages, but excess moisture will make it turn black. Redwood will not rot, but you should still use a sealer. Philippine mahogany is an excellent hardwood for decks. It is both rot and pest resistant. It also turns almost silver in color as it ages, or use marine oil to make it look like teak.
