How to Identify Morgan Horses

How to Choose Morgan Horses

Morgan horses are the most commonly used horse for park rangers, and historically they have been used by the United States military. They are among the most popular breeds of horse because of traits that make this breed of horse easy to train. However, before you purchase a Morgan horse, you need to consider a few factors.

  • Determine the overall health of the animal. Horses are susceptible to a variety of diseases and genetic problems. While Morgan horses are generally regarded as one of the most durable types of horses, they are still susceptible to these problems. Check the mouth and joints of the animal. These are the most common locations where problems will develop.

  • Evaluate the animal's training. If a horse is improperly trained, then it may never be suitable for your needs. In particular, if you want to use this horse to teach small children to ride, then the animal will need to be thoroughly trained. Before purchasing a horse, request to ride it. Horses that are overly resistant to your commands may not have been properly trained by their breeder. Poorly trained horses are only suitable for expert riders.

  • Observe the horse's overall temperament. Horses are notoriously temperamental, and this can make them dangerous. Before you decide to purchase a horse, evaluate its overall temperament towards people. Any signs of aggression or fear could signal that the animal has been abused. Abused horses can pose a serious risk to riders because mistrust can lead to violence towards any rider.

  • Do not purchase the first suitable horse you find. Shop around and attempt to negotiate the best possible price for the animal. Contact rival breeders, and determine how much their horses cost. This information can be a powerful negotiating tool.
