How to Choose Paint Colors for Chair Rails

Chair rails add style to any room and they offer protection of the wall itself. Chair rails can protect the wall from dings and chairs when they are pulled out from a table. Picking the right color for the chair rail helps to accentuate its style.

Things You'll Need:

  • Paint samples

  • Camera

  • Masking tape

  • Computer

  1. Take a picture of the room and bring it to your nearest store. This way when you are picking out paint samples you can compare them to the picture to get a better idea of what the color will look like.

  2. Bring the paint samples home.

  3. Attach the paint samples to the chair rail with the masking tape so you won't pull any paint or wallpaper off of the wall when you remove it.

  4. Observe the samples throughout the course of the day in different light.

  5. Compare how the different colors look in the daytime versus at night.

  6. Pick a color that compliments the existing wallpaper or wall paint.

  7. Choose a color that is a shade or two lighter than the color of the wall.

  8. Keep in mind the color of the existing furniture in the room as well so everything matches nicely.

  9. Use an online visualizer on your computer to help you see what your room will look like when it is complete.

  10. Paint a section of the chair rail once you choose the color. If you do not like the result, you will not have to redo the entire room.
