How to Choose Pet Health Insurance

Pet insurance can be a lifesaver if you have a pet that becomes ill to the point of high dollar treatments and medications. In fact, not only can pet insurance help defray the cost of emergency procedures, many maintenance procedures are covered too.

When you are ready to find pet insurance for your favorite pet, there are a few things you should know about or do before you make a decision.

  • Look at online reviews of the insurance company. Pet insurance companies are no different from any other company when it comes to researching them first. See what others have said and if they are pleased with the service. Look for red flags that indicate poor customer service or a lack of reimbursements.

  • Search for discounts. Many pet insurance companies have discounts for multiple pets or payment in advance. Seek out any type of cut in what you would typically have to pay. These discounts can sometimes make a huge difference in cost.

  • Find out if there is coverage from day one or a waiting period.

  • Learn if the pet insurance company will pay up front or if you have to pay and then be reimbursed later.

  • Talk to your veterinarian, friends and family. Sometimes your vet can give you recommendations on which company to choose. If you know of friends or family that has pet insurance for their animals, ask them what company they prefer.

Whether you have a bird, dog, cat, horse or ferret, pets need to be taken care of and pet insurance can help with some of the burden.
