How to Choose Polarized Sunglasses for Fly Fishing
Fishing requires you to spend a lot of time outdoors. During this time, protecting your eyes from harmful UV rays is important. Not just any pair of polarized sunglasses will suffice. It is important to purchase a pair that is comfortable and meets specific requirements.
Step 1: You can quickly narrow your choices by eliminating polarized sunglasses that offer less than 95% UV protection. These models simply do not offer enough protection. Look for models that offer 95-100% protection against UV rays.
Step 2: Only consider purchasing a pair that will float. Fishing requires lots of movement and bending. The chance that your polarized sunglasses will fall into the water at some point is quite high, and you do not want to lose them. If shopping in a store, ask the sales person to show you which models will float. If shopping online search for this information in the specifications section of the product listing.
Step 3: Look for options that have scratch-resistant lenses. Fishing can be hard on sunglasses and if you wish to purchase a pair that will last for years, you will need lenses that stay in good condition. Consider lenses that are shatterproof as well.
Step 4: Try on polarized sunglasses to ensure that they are lightweight. You will likely be wearing these for hours at a time, and do not want a pair that will weigh you down, or be uncomfortable.
Step 5: Try on each of the pairs that you are considering to see how they fit. They should fit snug, but not tight. Pay special attention to how they feel on the bridge of your nose as well as how they feel on your temples to make sure they are comfortable. With the polarized sunglasses on, move around much in the way you would while fishing. Be sure to make fast movements to see if the sunglasses stay on.
