How to Hire Roofing Contractors

How to Choose The Best Roofing Contractors

When choosing a roofing contractor, to avoid the scammers and assure you are working only with reputable contractors, find the companies your local government hires.  Registered contractors who work regularly on city, county, state and federal government projects have to be screened.  They must have all licensing in order and be insured.  The search can be done in an evening to find highly qualified roofing contractors.

  1. Go online to bidsync.com and bidlink.com.  This is where contractors for local governments and large corporations find bids.  Companies are listed according to their classification, and location. The search is free.  Look under closed bids to see who received awards for roofing services in the last year.

  2. Go on line to GSA.gov.  In order to qualify for GSA, the company must have a DUNS number and be registered in CCR. Again, this is a database listing companies according to specialty, and region.

  3. Find 10 companies who are local and who appear on both databases.

  4. Look for companies who have been in business at least five years.

  5. Check out their record on BBB and the Department of Consumer Affairs.

  6. Do a DUNS search.  This will give you the history of the company to its founding.

  7. Make sure the company performs a thorough roof inspection.

    • Flashings -- many times the origin of the roof leak.

    • Ventilation -- improper ventilation leads to dry rot and roof leaks

    • Roof Deck -- holds everything together.

  8. Review the bid.

    • What did they find?

    • What is the estimated cost of the project?

    • What is their warranty?

    • How does their bid compare with other offers?

  9. Your research on the government websites list what projects they worked on, who their city engineer or project manager was for the project with contact their information.  An excellent way to verify their track record before hiring.
