How to Choose Tire Chains

For people that live in or have just moved to a climate with cold winters, ice storms and snow, you should get tire chains and learn how to use them. The most common types of chains on the market include traditional tire chains, fabric boots and cables. With a couple of quick pointers, you will soon learn how to choose tire chains.

  1. Investigate whether chains are allowed in your state. In some states chains are not premissable and a few states specify regions and months when they are allowed.

  2. Evaluate how often you need to drive in icy or snow packed roads. If you work in town daily, it probably is worth the few dollars to buy chains and feel a little safer when driving the roads. Some people that work from their homes may not justify the costs for so little driving. Ladder chains or traditional chains work well for people that drive infrequently or only take short trips. For lots of winter driving in icy conditions you will get your moneys worth with cables because they last far longer compared to traditional chains.

  3. Shop for quality and installation time. Always look for well-made products. You also need to consider how quickly you can install chains on your tires. In addition, some are more difficult to install and you need to consider if you are physically fit for the job. Fabric tire covers only take a couple of minutes to install or remove and most people can do it by themselves. Chains do have to be removed when the roads are no longer snow covered or icy. You are not permitted to use chains on dry roads. These situations mean putting the chains on and taking them off all season long. Find the easiest to use and highest quality tire chains.
