How to Choose Tree Surgeons

Maintaining a property with large trees on it can pose special challenges. Caring for and safely maintaining a tree requires specialized knowledge and training that a tree surgeon can provide. Choosing the right tree surgeon can help prevent costly accidents.

Recommendations

Talk to family and friends that have had tree work done in the past. A positive recommendation from someone that has dealt with the tree surgeon in the past is an excellent place to start your search.

Insurance

A professional tree surgeon should carry liability insurance in the amount required by your state in case of accidents or injury. Ask to see proof of insurance coverage before hiring him or her.

Qualifications

Formal qualification for tree surgeons is available, but not required in all locations. Check with your local government to find out what qualifications or licenses are required. The International Society of Arboriculture provides a Certified Arborist recognition that indicates that the tree surgeon has at least three years of experience in tree surgery.

Standards

The American National Standards Institute provides standards for the trimming and pruning of trees. Ask if the tree surgeon follows these standards. Improper pruning can permanently damage or kill a tree. American National Standards Institute A300 standards provide guidelines to prevent this from happening.

Written Estimate

If you select a tree surgeon to examine the work to be completed, ask them to provide a written estimate of all the work to be done and the cost of the work. Ask if the estimate includes taxes, disposal and any special licenses or fees that needed to complete the work.
