How To Create a Wedding Music Checklist

How to Choose Your Wedding Music

Music creates memorable moments.  You want them at your wedding ceremony as well as your reception.  Choosing the music is not quite as important as the dress or the cake, but it is an essential part of your celebration that cannot be overlooked.

  1. Use a reputable online search engine to find a list of popular songs for a wedding ceremony and a wedding reception.  Although you may have some songs in mind, these lists will prevent forgetting popular and traditional wedding songs.

  2. Choose the music for the wedding ceremony first.  You only need about three songs in addition to The Wedding March (Here Comes The Bride).  Think about songs that are special.  This is your day and the songs you select reflect you as a couple.  There should be music playing as guests enter the hall.  Another song should be sung or played as the wedding party enters, and of course, The Wedding March.  Another song can be added while the bride and groom light candles, thank parents or take communion.  Adding more songs beyond this traditional layout can extend the ceremony and may not be necessary.

  3. Select the songs that you want played at your wedding reception.  These songs are as important as the songs at the ceremony, only this list should include about 100 songs.  You may want to include special songs for special dances, including the couple’s first dance, the bridal party dance, the mother and son dance and the father and daughter dance.

  4. Add other fun and traditional songs to your list including some to get the crowd moving.

  5. Write down any songs you do not want played.  This is information for the DJ who will be completing your playlist.

  6. Ask family members if there is any special song that they would like to add.  Some couples like to play a song their grandparents or parents played at their weddings.  These are memories you’d like to create at your wedding.
