How to Choose a Front Door Color

Our homes, both inside and out, say a lot about us. From kitchen wall color to family room rug design, the way we decorate our homes gives insight into our tastes and personality. There are numerous ways you can add your own personal touch. The first glimpse seen by most visitors is the entry of the home and the front door as you enter.

  • Determine your personal style. Are you bold, daring and like to make a statement? If so, figure out which colors reflect it best and use those to your advantage. Are you earthy and natural? Find some tones to match these qualities.

  • Determine the style of your home. This can have a huge impact on choosing front door color. Contemporary models tend to have more leeway with the color spectrum; however, traditional homes still fare well with a variety of hues as well. Decide if you want to stay true to the style of your home or if you are willing to go out on a limb.

  • Compare color palettes. Take your color choices and see how they match up to the existing colors of your exterior. Do they contrast well? Get samples, if at all possible so you have a good idea of how the finished product will look.

  • Check on the rules. Some developments have covenants, restrictions or homeowners' association guidelines. And yes, some are even so strict as to limit color choices for homeowners.

  • Shop around and check prices. Are you willing to paint a door or do you want one that is already finished? Be prepared for custom orders to cost more and take a little longer to arrive.
