How to Choose a Funeral Home

Dealing with a death in the family can be an extremely difficult time in anyone's life. Picking the right funeral home is a very hard task to do when you're grieving but it is an essential part of properly laying your loved one to rest.

  1. Consider what arrangements the deceased wanted for his or her funeral.  There is usually documentation of what the deceased wants for his or her funeral.  These documents could have information on preferred funeral homes and what type of funeral they would like.  At times, the funeral is also paid for in advance by the deceased.  If there is no preferences documented then skip to step two.

  2. Ask around for suggestions.  You can get suggestions from other relatives, friends and coworkers.  Many people have planned funerals for loved ones in the past so you're bound to get a couple great ideas.

  3. Research local funeral homes.  The Internet is one of the best sources for this.  Many funeral homes have Web pages where you can find prices as well as what services are offered. You can also call local funeral homes and ask for quotes over the phone, quotes do not need to given face to face.

  4. Check reviews of funeral homes.  Many sites will offer customer/client reviews of their services and you then will get a clearer idea of whether the funeral home is going to satisfy your needs.

  5. Visit a select few of these funeral homes.  Meet with the funeral director and discuss what type of funeral you'd like the price and then take a peek around.  You will need to make sure it is large enough in size to accommodate your needs as well as if it is a comfortable atmosphere.

  6. Decide which funeral home is the best choice.  Once you make your decision, go over the finalized plans with the funeral director.  Remember, any legitimate company will make sure you receive a contract when agreeing to their services.
