How to Choose a Holistic Health Practitioner

Finding a holistic health practitioner isn't terribly difficult. There are several things you need to keep in mind as you start your search. Questions about the specific practice, payments and insurance should top your list. You also need to think about location and credentials. This doesn't have to be as overwhelming as it sounds.

Choosing a holistic health practitioner doesn't have to be complicated. There are several things to think about before you just grab a name out of the phone book.

  • Decide what type of holistic health practitioner you want. You'll find acupuncturists, body workers, energy therapists, and more. Some modalities of holistic health may be a better fit for your situation than others. If you suffer from chronic back pain, finding a good massage therapist who uses aromatherapy may be great. Those who suffer from allergies may respond better to a naturopath than a massage therapist.

  • Check with your insurance company to see what is covered. A lot of insurance companies will cover some holistic practices, and others will offer heavy discounts. For example, most insurance companies will at least partially cover acupuncture if a doctor suggests it. Before you choose a practitioner check to see what is covered. This way you can look for practitioners that will accept and file the insurance paperwork for you.

  • Interview potential practitioners. If you take a few minutes to ask the right questions you'll be much better prepared to choose the right one. You want to ask about their practice including the methods in which they work. Don't be afraid to ask about qualifications and certifications as well. Some areas of holistic health will require certification while others don't. As an example, an acupuncturist can practice in most states with a simple certification that can be obtained in as little as 6 weeks. But longer programs that offer doctoral degrees in acupuncture can take as long as 6 years. You want to choose a practitioner with enough experience to make you comfortable.
