How to Choose a Horseback Riding Instructor

Getting a recommendation from someone who takes horseback riding lessons is usually the best way to find a good instructor. Researching an instructor’s qualifications can help to determine whether or not to sign up for lessons. The cost of the lessons is also a factor when deciding on an instructor to hire.

  • Talk with a friend who takes horseback riding lessons to find out if you should try the instructor. Find out how much the lessons cost and what they entail. If you like what your friend has to say, call the instructor and set up a time to discuss the lessons.

  • Meet with the riding instructor at the location where you will learn to ride. Ask the instructor to explain the lessons and find out how many it will take in order for you to be able to ride on your own with confidence. Find out what you should wear and sign up with the instructor if you decide to start taking lessons.

  • Look in the Yellow Pages for a riding instructor if you cannot get a recommendation from a trusted source. Read through the different ads and choose an instructor who teaches the style of riding you want to learn. Call the instructor and find out the cost for the lessons before you arrange a time to meet.

  • Check online to look for a good riding instructor. Use a search engine to find instructors in your area. Read through the different websites and look for the instructor’s credentials. Choose an instructor that has a lot of experience over one who is cheaper.

  • Ask a stable manager for an instructor recommendation. Many stables have instructors that work on a contract basis that you may be able to hire. Meet with an instructor and find out the cost for lessons. Set up a schedule with the instructor to begin taking lessons if you decide you have found the right person to teach you how to ride.
