How to Choose a Portrait Artist

Depending on the size and complexity, a painted portrait can cost hundreds of dollars. Its sentimental value is typically priceless. For these reasons alone, it is extremely important to take several things into account when choosing an artist to do the job.

  • View the portfolio of each artist you initially consider. This will give you a good idea of the quality and style of paintings they produce. Specialized niches should be noted, as well. For example, an artist whose specialty is painting animals might not be the best choice to paint a family portrait. In the event an individual does not have samples it is typically best to move on to the next candidate.

  • Select a portrait artist who has an eye for detail and is capable of adding personality to the individual or individuals they paint, when it deems necessary. Unfortunately, not everyone is adept at letting his or her personality shine through. Therefore, the artist must be able to bring life and vibrancy to the portrait.

  • Choose an artist who is comfortable working with your medium of choice. Oil paint is not the only substance used to create a portrait. Other materials include colored pencils, charcoal, watercolors and acrylics. Each of these products gives a different look to the finished product. Since many artists only work with one or two mediums, the individual you choose to complete the project must have ample experience using the technique and supplies you prefer.

  • Ask friends and family members, whose portraits you admire, for recommendations. You will usually find that they are more than willing to share their overall experience and voice any concerns that arose during the process.

  • Perform an Internet search on each artist that you are considering. Many times clients choose to post testimonials in regard to the work that was done and how they feel about the completed product.
