How to Choose an Exterminator
If your home or business becomes infested with mice or other pests, it isn't always possible to get rid of them on your own. When infestations escalate beyond your control, the services of an exterminator are often necessary. However, not every exterminator that advertises their services is legitimate or as successful as they may claim. For this reason it is important to choose wisely when hiring one to rid your home of pests.
- Ask around for a first hand reference from friends and family members who may have recently dealt with a pest problem. Asking people that you know is the best way to get an honest opinion as opposed to randomly picking an exterminator based of advertisements.
- Choose an extermination company that is a member of a pest control organization or association, such as the National Pest Management Association (NPMA). This will help to ensure you that the exterminator is held to a certain standard of conduct and has up to date training on the latest extermination methods.
- Confirm that the exterminator has experience with the type of pest you are trying to get rid of.
- Ask what their extermination techniques are. Ideally, you should look for a company that uses integrated pest management services (IPM services). Regardless of techniques used, they should be willing to explain how their treatment of your home works.
- Check with your state's pesticide regulatory agency to ensure that the company is licensed to use pesticides in your state. Additionally, you will need to verify that the exterminator is properly licensed and insured.
- Check the Better Business Bureau for any recent complaints or legal actions lodged against the extermination company that you are considering.
- Confirm that the address of the extermination company is not a P.O. Box. An extermination company that does not have a physical address may be a potential sign that it is not operating legitimately.
- Ask the exterminator for references. This way you will be able to check the satisfaction level of previous customers.
