Choosing the best veterinary school is a very important step to becoming a veterinarian.  There are several things you can do during the process of choosing a veterinary school to ensure that you attend the best veterinary school for your needs.

• Research the different types of specialties you may want to go into, such as internal medicine or surgery. Certain schools may offer a program designed for that specialty.


• Decide what type of animals you would like to work with, or whether you would like to work with all types of animals. You may choose to work with wildlife, exotic animals, livestock or small domesticated animals.


• Decide where you would like to gain employment once you have completed veterinary school as certain schools may be better at helping you achieve this goal. You may choose to work as a rescue worker, in an animal hospital or as a mobile veterinarian.

• Get in touch with the schools you like best by calling or writing to them, and request more information.


• Arrange a visit with the school, to discuss all details such as tuition, housing and employment opportunities. Speak with a guidance counselor, and take a guided tour of the school. Talk to other veterinary students while you are there, to see if they can offer any input on the school.


• Apply to your top choices for veterinary schools and wait to hear back from them.


• Keep applying to different schools until you have been accepted into a great veterinary program.
