How to Choose the Right Carpentry Tools

Not having the proper carpentry tools will cause problems in home repair projects.  Most people do not know exactly what tools they will need for each project. Shopping for carpentry tools can be confusing because there are many to choose from. Consulting with local experts will help you better understand what tools are needed for different types of jobs.

  • Consider the difficulty level of each project you intend to complete. Difficulty level is a big factor in the type of tools needed. Simple jobs such as assembling a small TV stand will only require a few basic tools. Building a kitchen cabinet without any directions will require tools that are more complex.

  • Decide if parts of the project require cutting wood or other material. If so, consider a handheld saw for small cuts or a power saw for large material, such as thick wood.

  • Review the instructions, if any, and take note if the project is secured by screws or nails. This will tell you if you need a hammer or screwdriver. If you need a screwdriver, be sure to determine if you need a Philips or flathead.

  • Purchase a small generator if your working with power tools such as circular saws in an area that does not have electrical outlets nearby. Generators come in several sizes; many are easily transported in a truck and can be carried around the job site.

  • Purchase a toolbox after you buy all your tools. Saws, hammers, nails and levels come in different sizes. Choose a toolbox that is big enough to store all the necessary tools.

  • Consider renting tools and equipment if you do not plan to use them on a regular basis. This will save you a considerable amount of money and storage space rather than purchasing tools and equipment you only plan to use occasionally.
