How to Claim Disabled Access Credit
All eligible small businesses that have incurring expenses to make their businesses more accessible to people with disabilities may claim credit on an IRS form called Form 8826. Those expenses must comply with "the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990." Small businesses that can claim disabled access credit must have gross receipts of 1 million dollars or less. In addition, the small business cannot have over 30 employees.
- Determine if your small business is qualified. Your small business must have expenditures to improve access for disabled people. All costs must be within the limits of the Americans with Disabilities Act. In addition, you must have a service at a facility that was established after November 5, 1990.
- Go to IRS.gov and download Form 8826. You must fill in "Line 1" with the total amount of expenditures that you qualify for in order to claim disabled access credit. The minimum expenses have to be a minimum of $250 and between $10,000.
- Fill out "Line 6" of Form 8826 to calculate your credit. Multiply your eligible expenses by 50%.
- Add more information in "Line 6" or IRS Form 8826. Add all the allowable disable access credit you received from S corporations or from partnerships. Add that disabled access credit to "Line 6" and then calculate that amount to estimate the total credit. All disabled access credit is limited to $5,000 from all sources.
- Take your disabled access credit total and place it on Form 3800, General Business Credit. The General Business Credit form is a form you use to calculate all tax liability limits on business credits.
- Place the allowable credits you can claim on your income tax return, which is Form 1040.
