How to Clean Carpets Without Using a Carpet Cleaner

If you have carpet in your home, at some point you will need to clean it. However, not all carpet cleaning requires the use of a carpet cleaning machine to take care of the problem. Sometimes carpets only require a small cleaning to remove the offending stain or substance. You can clean a carpet without renting a carpet cleaning machine.

Supplies
Dishwashing soap
White Vinegar
Borax
Salt
Baking Soda
Bowl
Measuring cup
Brush with nylon bristles
Spray bottle
Towel

  1. Remove small unsightly stains by mixing one cup of warm water with the soap. Dip the brush into the soap mixture and scrub gently on the stained area. Mix one 1/2 cup of vinegar and 1/2 cup of water into a spray bottle. Let the mixture stand about 15 minutes, then clean with a wet towel.

  2. Use club soda to remove wine stains. Fill the spray bottle and apply to the carpet. Let it stand for approximately 10 minutes. Use a towel to blot the area until it is dry and the stain is removed.

  3. Try removing bubble gum or candle wax with ice.  Apply the ice directly to the substance and allow it to harden. Pick it up from the carpet.

  4. Remove grease and stubborn dirt stains, by sprinkling a mixture of salt and Borax, along with vinegar mist from your spray bottle. Allow the mixture to dry overnight and simply vacuum up.

  5. Use a light mist of hydrogen peroxide to remove blood or spaghetti sauce stains. Let it sit for two minutes then blot with warm water. However, it is a good idea to test a small unseen area of the carpet, to be sure it will not strip out the color before using this method.

  6. Deodorize your carpets with baking soda. Sprinkle a light amount over your carpet, let stand for 10 minutes, then vacuum.
