How to Clean Cedar Shingle Siding

Cedar shingle siding helps to protect the side of your house from being damaged.  With the changing seasons of the weather, and build up of grime, your cedar shingles can get quite dirty or discolored over time. Cleaning your shingles siding annually can help remove discoloration and grime, and get your shingles back to looking good again.

Materials Needed:

  • Powdered oxygen bleach

  • Plastic bucket

  • Pump sprayer

  • Synthetic bristle scrub brush

  • Ladder

  • Garden hose

  1. Use a plastic bucket to mix powdered oxygen bleach with warm water. Refer to the manufacture's instructions to see what amount of oxygen bleach and water is needed to mix the solution. Carefully pour the mixed solution into a pump sprayer.

  2. Spray a 3-foot by 3-foot section at a time with oxygen bleach solution onto the cedar shingles. To get easier access to the shingles stand on ladder. Allow at least 15 minuets for the bleach solution to soak on the siding.

  3. Scrub the siding with a synthetic bristle scrub brush after you let the bleach solution soak on the siding. This helps to remove the discoloring, along with any dirt and mildew buildup on the cedar shingles.

  4. Use a garden hose to rinse the siding. This will work to wash away not only the oxygen bleach solution, but also any loosened grime.

  5. Clean each remaining 3-foot by 3-foot sections of the cedar shingles siding using the same process as above. It is easiest if you work from the top of the siding down towards the bottom.

  6. Allow the cedar siding to dry completely once you are finished cleaning it in its entirety.
