How to Clean Copper Gutters Easily

Copper gutters add beauty to any home. They function much like basic gutters and need to be cleaned and maintained in the same way. Keeping your gutters clean will allow they to function properly and help protect your roof and walls from water damage. While some gutters are difficult to clean, copper gutters can be cleaned easily.

Items needed:

  • Ladder

  • Gloves

  • Water hose

  • 2 cups salt

  • 2 cups flour

  • 2 cups vinegar

  • Bucket

  • Scrub brush

  • Trash bags or buckets

Step 1: Lean a ladder against the side of your house. Climb the ladder to access your gutters. Be sure the ladder is standing on flat ground so it will not lean or fall over. You may want to ask a friend or neighbor to hold the ladder while you are cleaning the copper gutters.

Step 2: Use your hands to remove any sticks, leaves or limbs that are trapped in the gutters. Drop the debris into a trash bag or bucket and hang it from the ladder, or set it on the ground below you. You may want to wear gloved to protect your hands from cuts, dirt and stains.

Step 3: Bring your water hose up to the gutters. Stick the end of the water hose into the gutter and turn the water on high. Use the gutter to remove any stuck-on dirt and grime from the gutters. Move to the gutter downspout and stick the hose in the top of it. Spray water down the downspouts to remove any dirt and debris that is trapped inside.

Step 4: Mix the salt, flour and vinegar together in a bucket. Blend the ingredients until the form a thick paste. Use a scrub brush to apply the paste to the copper gutters. Scrub the gutters with the brush until they are polished and shiny. You can also polish the downspouts.

Step 5: Repeat these steps to clean and polish all of the gutters and downspouts. Clean your gutters every three to five months to keep them clean of debris and functioning properly.
