How to Clean Drains
Drains often become clogged over time due to dirt, food, hair, grease and other debris becoming stuck in your drain leading to a blockage of the drain pipe eventually. This often causes your drain to either drain slowly or not at all leading to a problem for you later on. Do not worry though, as you can easily fix most clogged drains yourself.
Cola - Most brands of cola contain a chemical called phosphoric acid that is often strong enough to unclog a stubborn clogged drain. Add a two liter of cola directly into the affected drain, and allow it to sit overnight. Clog the drain with a wet rag and leave unattended until the following morning. Check the drain in the morning to see if it is clear, if not you can repeat the process as needed. If it is clear you should run the hot water to clear the cola and other debris that may still be in your drain.
Boiling Water - Many clogged drains are caused by years of oil and grease that are allowed to solidify on the walls of your drainage pipe which will cause it to clog up over time. Boiling water will loosen the grease and allow it to liquefy and pass through your drain. Add a quarter of cup of dish soap to your clogged drain, and immediately follow with a pot of boiling water. Continue to run the hot water through your pipes long enough to allow the grease and oil to pass out into your sewer system.
Vinegar & Baking Soda - A great all-natural drain opener is the combination of vinegar and baking soda. The two ingredients together cause a chemical reaction that is powerful enough to clear even the toughest of clogs. Add three quarters of a cup of dry baking soda into your affected drain, and then immediately follow with two cups of vinegar. Add a wet rag to the drain opening, and allow the mixture to sit for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove the rag to see if the drain is clear, if not you can repeat the process again.
