How to Clean Home Fountains
Fountains not only look great in the garden, but they also look just as fabulous on the inside of the house. The best tip available for keeping a fountain looking its best is to keep it clean and properly maintained.
Cleaning a fountain is something that can be easily done by following a few simple steps.
- Unplug and remove the pump from the fountain.
- Use a damp sponge to clean the outside of the pump.
- Pour some household vinegar in a bucket.
- Submerge the pump in the vinegar and allow it to set for at least 30 minutes. This is done to disinfect the pump.
- Remove the water from the fountain. You may need to use a shop vac to suck the water out if the fountain is stationary.
- Use a scoop to remove any decorative rocks or stones from the fountain.
- Place the rocks removed from the fountain in a bucked fill with warm soapy water.
- Use a stiff brush to scrub the stones.
- Pour out the soapy water and rinse the stones with clean water.
- Fill another bucket with warm water and add dishwashing soap to make a soapy solution.
- Use the soapy solution with a non-abrasive sponge to scrub the fountain.
- Dip the sponge in clean water to rinse off the soap residue from the fountain.
- Take the pump out of the bucket filled with vinegar and remove the cover from the side. Use an old toothbrush to scrub the inside of the filter, and then hold the filter under running water to rinse.
- Replace the cover and install the pump back on the fountain.
- Replace the decorative rocks and refill the fountain with water.
