How to Clean Indoor Outdoor Patio Rugs

Indoor-outdoor rugs come in many different shapes, sizes, materials, textures and colors. They add a decorative look to the area you place them in. Not only are they decorative but they also protect the surface. Over time the rugs can become dirty with constant use. The rugs should be cleaned regularly to keep them looking good.

How to Clean Indoor Outdoor Patio Rugs

Materials Needed

  • Water

  • Liquid dish soap

  • Spray bottle

  • Scrub brush with a long handle

  • Garden hose

  1. Remove the carpet and protective pad under the rug. Place them in the driveway. Avoid placing them on the grass because they can become dirty with mud. Spread the rug and padding flat on the surface of the driveway.

  2. Make sure you read the care instructions for both the carpet and the padding. They may suggest a different way to clean the rug.

  3. Mix water and liquid dish soap in a spray bottle. Mix enough to cover the size of rug you have. You may have to mix additional water and soap for larger rugs.

  4. Spray the rug and pad with the cleaner until it is soaked. Use a scrub brush with a long handle to scrub the rug and padding. Rinse both items thorough with a garden hose. Allow the sun to dry the rug for several hours.

  5. Turn the pad and the rug over. Spray the cleaner over both items until it is soaked. Scrub the padding and rug with the long handled scrub brush. Rinse the rug and padding with the garden hose. Allow the sun to completely dry the items.

  6. Turn the rug and padding over to check to see if the rug is dry. If the rug and pad is still wet, allow it to further dry in the sun. If you place the rug and padding back while it is still wet, you can risk causing mold and mildew.
