How to Clean Mold From Wood Paneling

Mold is caused by moisture, and it is not uncommon for mold to become a problem for wood paneling.  Wood paneling is pourous enough that it will hold onto moisture and allow the mold to grow and expand.  Mold may cause health issues and trigger allergies in some individuals.  It is easy to clean but you will also need to find the cause of the mold.

Things you'll need:

  • Water

  • Dishwashing soap such as Dawn

  • Bleach

  • Spray bottle

  • Gloves

  • Mask

  • Disposable rags or sponges

  1. Put on a mask to protect yourself from mold spores.  Mold can be dangerous, depending on the type, and can also cause allergic reactions.  High concentrations can cause problems even for people who are not allergic to mold.  Make sure your mask is labeled to protect from allergens and mold.

  2. Vacuum the area to remove any loose mold spores.  This will help to prevent the mold from coming back once removed from the wood paneling.

  3. Mix a solution of dishwashing soap, bleach and water in a spray bottle.  For a full bottle, use about 1/4 cup of bleach and about two tablespoons of soap and fill with water.  Shake bottle well to mix.

  4. Put on the gloves to protect your hands from the mold and bleach.  Ensure the mask is on for the next step.

  5. Spray the affected area well with the solution made in step one.  Make sure it is well-coated and let set for a few minutes to allow the solution to penetrate the mold.

  6. Scrub the mold.  Rough sponges may work better to agitate the mold and remove it from the wood paneling.  Let set for several more minutes.

  7. Repeat steps three and four until the mold has been removed.

  8. Rinse the area well with water and a clean sponge, and allow to dry.

  9. Apply mineral spirits to restore shine to the wood paneling.

  10. Replace wood paneling if mold continues to reappear after cleaning.
