How to Clean Mold

Mold is a bacterium that starts off as a microscopic organism but can grow into a big problem if not treated and removed in a timely manner. Mold within a home can cause the inhabitant to become extremely sickl. The good news is that mold can be removed in a few simple steps.

Materials Needed

  • Gloves

  • Mask

  • Eye Protection

  • Spray Bottle

  • Detergent

  • Bleach

  • Scrub Brush and Bucket

  1. Identify all areas that that the mold needs to be removed from. Take mental notes of the areas making sure not to touch the mold without protective gloves. Identify if the mold is only on the surface of the material or if it has saturated all the way through the whole area. If the mold has spread through the entire area or inside a wall then special kits may be required but can be purchased from professional cleaning companies.  If the mold is only on the surface you can remove it yourself.

  2. Protect yourself. Before starting put on rubber latex gloves, a protective mask that covers the mouth and nose area and goggles for eye protection.

  3. Spray the mold lightly with water to dampen the area. Removing the mold when it is dry increases the chances of the mold spreading.

  4. Mix the cleaning solution in a bucket, one part washing detergent, five parts bleach and 15 parts warm water.

  5. Submerge the scrub brush into the bucket soaking it in the cleaning solution and wash down the pre-dampened surface.

  6. Repeat the above mentioned steps until the entire mold is removed. Place a small fan near the cleaned site to help the air circulation to dry the area quickly.
