How to Clean Out a Shower Drain

Keeping your drains clean and blockage-free will keep them working properly and prevent water damage. Shower drains can become clogged just as easily as sinks and bathtubs. When a drain stops draining the water properly, or does not drain it at all, it may be clogged and need to be cleaned.

Step 1: Remove the drain stopper and cover from the drain. Both should pull straight up out of the drain. If the drain cover is attached with screws, use a screwdriver to remove the screws and set them aside for later use.

Step 2: Look down the drain to see if you can see any blockage. If the blockage can be reached with your fingers, use them to remove it. You may want to wear gloves to protect your hands.

Step 3: Pour liquid drain cleaner into the drain. Follow the directions on the bottle to know how much to use. Allow the drain cleaner to work for 15 to 20 minutes.

Step 4: Run some water in the shower. Pay attention to the speed that it drains. If it is draining slowly or does not drain at all, the drain is will need further cleaning.

Step 5: Rent a drain snake from your local hardware store. Insert the tip of the drain snake into the drain and twist it. Tug the snake upward to remove any clogs that may be deep inside the drain. You may need to use the drain snake several times before completely removing the clog from the shower drain.

Step 6: Run water in the shower again and check to make sure it drains properly.

Step 7: Add more drain cleaner to the drain and let it set over night. The drain should be clean by the next morning.
