How to Clean Patio Furniture Cushions

Many homeowners often overlook cleaning patio furniture cushions. Most of the cushions are waterproof but they still need cleaning because dirt and dust accumulate on them. The cushions must be maintained on a regular basis so they will last a long time and stay in good condition.

Materials Needed

  • Mild liquid dish detergent

  • Water

  • Borax

  • Bucket with a pouring spout

  • Cloth

  • Spray bottle

  • Fabric protector

  1. Pour 1-teaspoon mild liquid dish detergent, 1 quart water and 1 teaspoon Borax into a bucket with a pouring spout. Swish the solution with a cloth.  Pour some of the solution into a spray bottle. Replace the cap on the bottle and shake the bottle to further mix the ingredients.

  2. Spray both sides of the cushions until they are well saturated. It is okay to soak the cushions because you want to remove all of the dirt as well and mold and mildew you may not see.

  3. Allow the solution to work on the cushions for 20 minutes. Rinse the cushions thoroughly with a garden hose. Make sure all of the dirt, debris and cleaning solution are removed. Place the cushions on their edges and allow them to dry upright until they are damp.

  4. Spray both sides of the cushions with fabric protector. Not only will the fabric protector protect the cushions but it will also make the cushions much easier to clean the next time.

  5. Allow the cushion to dry for several more hours and replace them pack on the furniture.
