How to Clean Riding Stables

While it may not be a fun job to undertake, keeping your riding stables clean is a very important aspect to owning horses. By keeping the riding stables clean, you are helping to ensure that the animals you own are kept healthy.

What You Will Need

  • Pitchfork

  • Wheelbarrow

  • Shovel

  • Washing basin

  • Broom

  • Shaving fork

  • Scrubbing brush

  • Rubber boots

  • Work gloves

  1. Put on the proper clothing for working in the stable. Make sure to wear a good pair of work gloves and sturdy rubber boots as you will be coming in close contact with horse urine and manure.

  2. Remove the horses from the stalls you will be cleaning. Place the horses in empty stalls or allow them to run in a paddock if you have one.

  4. Use your shovel, pitchfork and shaving shovel to remove the used bedding, manure and any wood shavings into your wheelbarrow. Change the type of tool depending on the type of waste you are cleaning.

  5. Empty out the wheelbarrow as needed at your selected manure pile.

  6. Continue removing any waste in the stall until it has all been removed.

  7. Clean out the other stalls using the same process until all waste has been removed from the stalls.

  8. Scrub down the stalls with a strong brush to remove any extra waste.

  9. Rinse out the stall with water and allow to dry.

  10. Sweep the rest of the stable clean and remove any additional waste to your manure pile.

  11. Return the watering and feeding troughs to the stall and fill with fresh food and water.

  12. Line each stall with fresh bedding.
