How to Clean Up Mold From Flood Water Damage
Water and humidity are the perfect environment for mold to grow. If your home has had water damage that seeped into the carpets or walls, you may end up with mold. The key in any flooding situation is to clean the water up as quickly as possible. Standing water or when carpet is soaked in a carpet can form mold quickly.
- Find out how the flooding
happened. If water is still coming into your home and there no rain
outdoors, chances are you have a pipe that has burst. Shut the water
off to your entire home. The faster you get the water out of your
home and get every dry, the less chance of mold developing. - Rent or have a professional come
in and extract the water from carpets and furniture. The new
extraction process for removing water is actually very effective as
long as it is done shortly after the flood. - Take precautions when dealing with
mold. Use gloves, eye coverings, and a mask so that the mold does
not touch your skin and you do not breath it in. Once the water is
removed from your home, turn on fans to help dry everything that was
affected. - Check under your carpets. You can
take an edge of the carpet where it was very wet and pull up the
carpet nails to see the top and underside of the carpet padding. If
it appears moist or you see any signs of mold, the carpet will need
to be pulled and replaced. All the carpet and padding needs to be in
sealed in plastic before it is disposed. - Scrub the floors under the carpets
with breach and water. Wait until it dries and then you can lay new
padding and carpet.
