How to Clean Windows Like a Professional

If you have a big window job to do, you may be intimidated by it. Do not worry; cleaning windows like a professional is easier than you may think. All you need is the right supplies and cleaning materials to complete the job in no time with professional results. No need for expensive window washing services, as you can easily do it yourself for free.

Cleaning Materials

  • Mild Detergent - Mild detergent such as dish soap is often the only cleaner you need to clean your windows to a streak-free finish. Add one teaspoon of dish soap to two gallons of water in a large bucket to make a cleaning solution. Use a large sponge to wipe the windows clean, and then rinse with a hose or bucket of clean water to remove any suds that may be present.

  • Vinegar - Vinegar is an all-natural cleaner and disinfectant that works very well for cleaning the dirtiest of windows. Mix a cleaning solution in a large bucket; you will need one-half cup of vinegar for every one gallon of water that you use. Mix the solution thoroughly before applying to your windows. Use a large rag or sponge to wipe the windows clean and then rinse with a hose of sponge using clean water.

  • Murphy’s Oil - Murphy’s Oil soap is a commercial window cleaner that is often used to clean wood surfaces. This cleaning solution can also help you to remove any water spots that may have formed on your window after drying. Simply apply a small amount of Murphy’s Oil soap to a clean, dry, lint-free rag and wipe away the water spots in a circular motion until the water spots are gone and your window is clean and spot-free.

  • Lemon Juice - If your windows are extra greasy or dirty, you can add a little lemon juice to your cleaning solution to give your cleaner the power of citrus. Add a quarter of a cup of lemon juice for each gallon of cleaning solution that you have mixed in a large bucket for extra cleaning power.

Tips & Tricks on Drying

  • Newspaper - Newspaper is the best way to clean your windows to a streak-free shine. Simply crumble up a piece of newspaper, and then reopen it to its original size. Dry in a circular motion until all water is absorbed and your windows are clean and dry. Newspaper will not leave behind any lint on your windows and provides an excellent streak-free finish.

  • Squeegee - Many professional window cleaning companies use a squeegee to remove the excess water from windows. A squeegee provides a rubber edge, much like that of a windshield wiper blade, which removes water from the window effortlessly.
