How to Clean Your DWI Criminal Record
If you have a criminal record due to a DWI charge, then you know how hard it can make things in life. Trying to rent an apartment, get a loan or even a job can become challenging because your conviction will be the first thing they ask you about. Cleaning up your criminal record will help save many headaches down the road.
- Conduct some research on your states expungement laws. Some states may allow you to expunge a DWI conviction but it will be very difficult. If you were wrongfully accused and your case was dismissed, then the process should be pretty easy and straight forward as all states will allow for an expengement of wrong convictions.
- Obtain a copy of your criminal record. Your states court of clerks should be able to get these for you. You can only expunge the charges on your criminal record, so you will need to know what is exactly on your record. If your conviction happened in another state, then you will have to get into contact with that states court of clerks and try to get the record from them.
- Get copies of any court orders and disposition in order to file a motion. If the disposition does not match the court order, you will need this to prove the case.
- File a petition with the court to have your record expunged. By doing this you are asking the court to officially change your records to remove the DWI. Make sure the petition states exactly what you want removed and the reasons you want it removed. You will need to submit copies of all of your evidence with your petition and hopefully get the record expunged.
