How to Clean a Flat Screen Television

A flat screen television is a big investment and its worth taking good care of so that it will provide entertainment for years to come. Flat screen televisions collect dust over time and can easily become smudged with fingerprints. It is important to carefully clean your flat screen television from time to time.

Supply List

  • Clean microfiber cloths

  • Distilled water

  • Cleaning solution (optional)

1. Turn your flat screen television off and unplug the power cord. You will be able to see any fingerprints and smudges better with the unit turned off.

2. Locate a clean, dry microfiber cloth to remove any dust or fingerprints on the screen of your television. Some newer televisions may come with a cleaning cloth that should be used to clean your television. If you have an older flat screen you may need to purchase a cleaning cloth. Many electronics stores sell cleaning cloths designed specifically for laptops and LCD televisions. When cleaning your television use extra care and never push or scrub the screen.

3. Refrain from using any abrasive materials or harsh cleaners. Paper towels and T-shirts are not acceptable materials to clean your television with, as these can easily scratch the screen. If you encounter a spot that is difficult to remove, slightly dampen the cloth with lukewarm water and gently rub in a circular motion. If your screen streaks easily, using distilled water will help prevent this from occurring. Never use Windex or dish soap to clean your television, as additives in these items may damage the screen. If stubborn spots persist, visit an electronics store and pick up a bottle of screen cleaning solution. Always apply the solution to a cloth and never directly to the television.

4. Dry any wet spots with a clean microfiber cloth. Clean your television screen regularly.
