How to Clean an Air Conditioning Filter

Air conditioning filters stop dirt, bugs and germs from blowing out of the air conditioner and into the home. If filters are not cleaned often or properly, they can prevent the air conditioner from working and can allow harmful elements to enter your home.

  1. Turn off the air conditioner and unplug it. This prevents you from getting shocked while you are working on the filter.

  2. Remove the front cover. Some covers may be bolted in place; others will simply snap in place. Set the cover aside.

  3. Remove the filter. You should see two small tabs sticking out of the air conditioner. Pull the tabs to remove the filter. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove the dust or dirt that falls from the filter as you remove it.

  4. Use an all-purpose cleaner or a mixture of even parts of vinegar and water to wash the filter. Soak a rag with the cleaning solution, and wipe it on the filter. You can also submerge the filter in the solution and allow it to soak for an hour.  Water may clean the dirt from the filter, but it cannot kill bacteria and germs that may live on it.

  5. Run the filter under running water to rinse off the cleaning solution.

  6. Place the filter on a towel, and allow it to air dry. You can also use a blow dryer on a low heat setting, or place the filter outside to dry in the sun.

  7. Slide the air filter back in place, and replace the air conditioner's cover. Air filters should be cleaned every six months or each year before the air conditioner is turned on.
