How to Clean an Auto Fuel Injector

Proper vehicle maintenance is important to keep your car, truck or SUV running well.  Keeping up maintenance on your vehicle can easily get expensive so determine what maintenance tasks you can do at home.  Cleaning auto fuel injectors on an annual basis helps keep your fuel economy high and doing the maintenance yourself saves you even more money.

  1. Buy a fuel injector cleaning kit.  Fuel injector cleaning kits can be purchased from online retailers or from a local auto store such as Advanced Auto Parts, Auto Zone or NAPA Auto Parts.

  2. Block the fuel flow from the injector.  When cleaning the fuel injectors, you must block the fuel flow from the injectors so that none of the cleaner gets in the engine.  To do this, you can use tubing to avoid the fuel injectors or take out the fuel pump and keep the flow of gasoline away from the fuel injectors.

  3. Hook up the fuel injector cleaners.  Follow the instructions that came with your fuel injector cleaning kit to hook the fuel injector cleaners to the fuel injectors.  After the injectors and cleaners are connected, start the engine of your vehicle.

  4. Keep the engine running.  The engine needs to stay running until the fuel injector cleaning solution has entirely worked through the fuel injectors.

  5. Remove the fuel injector cleaners.

  6. Reinstall the fuel injectors.

  7. Route fuel back to the injectors.

  8. Start the engine.  After cleaning the fuel injectors, you should notice a significant change in the sound your engine makes when running.  If there is not a noticeable difference in how your vehicle runs or sounds, you need to clean your fuel injectors again, see a professional cleaner or replace your fuel injectors.
