How to Eat Before a Colonoscopy

How to Cleanse the Colon Before a Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is an internal examination of the colon that allows your doctor to see an image of the lining of your colon for abnormalities.  An outpatient procedure, your doctor will use this test to determine whether certain problems are present, such as lesions or polyps. To prepare for the procedure, the colon has to be cleaned and emptied in order to get accurate exam results.

  1. Begin approximately three days in advance of the procedure by starting a clear liquid diet.  Clear liquid includes Popsicles, Jell-O, chicken or beef broth, clear sodas, juices with any pulp removed and coffee. Avoid milk and creamer in your coffee and red or purple liquids; foods colored red or purple can adversely affect the ability of your doctor to get a clear view of your colon during the procedure.

  2. Include foods that decrease the bulk of your stools, such as eggs, steamed fish and skinless chicken.

  3. Avoid foods that are high in fiber, nuts, rice, seeds, creamy soups and red meats.

  4. Include digestive enzyme supplements. If the food you eat does not break down properly, undigested food can enter the colon. Digestive enzymes help empty the contents of your stomach faster and should be an important step in preparation for the exam.

  5. Start using the preparation formula your doctor has prescribed, whether polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution or Sodium phosphate (NaP).  Follow the directions that your doctor sends home with you prior to the day of the exam. Drink this in increments, stay close to a bathroom. You will want to stay home since this will start cleaning your colon out quickly and you will make multiple trips to the bathroom, until your colon has emptied out.
