How to Clip a Cocker Spaniel

The coat on a Cocker Spaniel can often grow in long and thick. Learning to properly care for and clip their coat can save you money that you would normally have to spend to have your Cocker Spaniel groomed on a regular basis. Once you learn how to clip your Cocker Spaniel, it will be easy to keep up with the regular grooming that this breed requires.

  1. Wash your Cocker Spaniel with a shampoo made for dogs. Be sure that you get all of the dirt and other debris that may be stuck in their long coat thoroughly removed.

  2. Rinse the shampoo out of the coat of your Cocker Spaniel thoroughly, and then dry them off with a clean dry towel.

  3. Use a blow dryer to dry the coat on your Cocker spaniel, or allow them to air dry. Be sure that their coat is thoroughly dry before beginning the process of clipping their coat.

  4. Brush your Cocker Spaniel using a brush that is designed to remove tangles from a dog with a longer coat.

  5. Start with the face and neck area. Apply the clippers to this area using the smallest attachment that is provided with your clippers. You should run the clippers over this area carefully and then move to the top part of the ears where the ears meet the head.

  6. Attach the longest attachment to your clippers to use on the rest of your cocker Spaniel. You want to leave the length of the hair semi long because this is what is standard for the breed.

  7. Clip the hair on the bottom of the ears first, and then move on to the rest of the body of your Cocker Spaniel.

  8. Trim the hair around the feet and tail of your Cocker Spaniel with scissors until they are the desired length and blend in well with the rest of his or her haircut.
