How to Compare Internet Providers
There are so many providers out there that it's important to compare Internet providers before choosing one. Cost is an important factor, but there are other considerations to make. The speeds associated with different service providers can vary greatly. The installation methods and up-time can also vary. These are all considerations to make when choosing an Internet provider.
With so many options available for Internet providers it can be difficult to choose. When you look at switching or adding a service, there are several things to compare.
- Sit down and figure out exactly what you want and need from your Internet service. If you are only online long enough to check email, you can get away with a lower speed for a lower cost. However, if you stream movies and music, connect your video gaming systems, or have multiple computers then you'll need a much faster option.
- Start looking online for prices in your area. You want to separate the prices by the services, the type of provider, and any additional fees. Keep a notebook handy to jot down this information. Include the name of the Internet provider, the type of service (DSL, Cable, 4G), estimated download speeds and installation costs along with the monthly cost.
- Look for contract information. A lot of Internet providers will offer you a low introductory rate but then lock you in to a contract term for 1 or 2 years. If you don't mind being in a contract this may not be a problem. Write down the terms of any contracts in your notebook.
- Call the service providers to ask about other specials offered. If you find a lower price than what is advertised online most companies will try to beat the price. This works in your favor, and it never hurts to ask.
- Find out what kind of installation the service includes. Some companies may charge for a technician to come out and install the service. Others will just mail you what you need to get set up. If you need Internet service quickly a self installation option may be better even if it costs a few extra dollars for shipping.
