How to Compare Low Cost Movers

Moving is a stressful time for any size household or office. Moving a few miles away or across the country can be an expensive and daunting task. Discovering a few ways to bring down a mover's fee is important and should require a bit of research online or the telephone. Here are some tips on how to compare different moving rates.

  • There are many movers that advertise themselves as discounted. Not understanding what is actually included in their service offers can result in several hundred dollars in add-on charges. Many of these companies are not completely clear about their rates in the initial meeting or phone conversation.  Make a list of questions to ask.

  • Find out exactly how each mover's rate is calculated. Many moving companies have a flat rate per mover.  Hourly a mover may be $50. This rate may include commute time, breaks and time spent packing or unpacking boxes.

  • Some companies offer a special package deal at a flat rate. This may include packing and moving a set number of rooms for a specific price.  To have items packed in boxes and securely closed will probably be an additional charge. Be sure to ask if packing is included in their standard move rate. Some companies charge per box or a flat rate for a number of boxes.

  • Before committing to a low cost mover ask for an estimate. Be clear about the number of rooms in the house, and include the garage or other storage areas.  It is also a good idea to find out what can be done prior to the movers arriving to save time and money.

  • No frills packing companies are often the cheapest. These low cost movers are not always in local television or radio advertisements. Look online for neighborhood moving companies that are insured against damages. Use these tips when comparing low cost movers.
